“I paint what I like,” David Hockney once said, “when I like, and where I like.” His multifaceted oeuvre certainly supports that statement. Ever since Hockney’s early days in Yorkshire, he has experimented with painting, drawing, printmaking, watercolor, and photography. Born in 1937, a time when homosexuality was still a penal offense, Hockney also addresses themes of queerness and eros in his work, but with subtlety. Now 84, and living between Normandy and the U.K., Hockney is painting landscapes, sometimes panoramically, that capture the passage of time in swift color. This retrospective presents 60 years of Hockney. —Elena Clavarino
