“I’m never interested in the painting being a mirror to culture,” the Brooklyn-based artist Dana Schutz has said. “I think that’s really boring. What I’m interested in is painting as an affective space. The place where the hierarchies of the world can be rearranged within the space of a painting.” Schutz subverts expectations with her compositions, which live between abstraction and figuration. Her portraits often feel like landscapes, and her landscapes can feel like still lifes. Mostly, she’s interested in the interconnectedness between objects, people, and the world around us. This is Schutz’s first solo exhibition with David Zwirner, where she is presenting a series of new works. —Elena Clavarino
