Cullud Wattah

Nov 2 – Dec 5, 2021
425 Lafayette Street, New York, NY 10003, United States

It’s set in Flint, Michigan, so you know it’s about water and lead, incompetence and crisis. Taking its subject straight from the news, the world-premiere play Cullud Wattah looks at three generations of Black women whose water supply has been contaminated for 936 days. Playwright Erika Dickerson-Despenza shows how the toxic water, dismissed by politicians and health officials, taints the body and the psyche. “The play is not so much about Flint,” Dickerson-Despenza has said. “It is about how an apocalypse makes everything else bubble to the surface.” —J.D.
