It is said to have started in 1924 with Coco Chanel, who designed costumes for the Ballets Russes ballet Le Train Bleu. Ninety-six years later, the list of couturiers who’ve made tutus, tunics, and tights for classical, modern, and postmodern dance is long, long, long. Exhibitions on the subject need smart organization, otherwise it’s a free for all. This exhibition is divided into the themes “Shapes,” “Second Skin,” “Not So Classical,” and “Materials.” It includes work by Iris van Herpen, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Walter Van Beirendonck, as well as midcentury designers Dior, Balmain, and Saint Laurent, followed up by Gaultier, Versace, Lagerfeld, and many more. —L.J.
