Home base for the Vienna Philharmonic is the renowned Golden Hall of the Musikverein, inaugurated in 1870. A stone’s throw away, you’ll find the Wienerkonzerthaus, which opened its doors in 1913. The architectural contrast is extreme—neoclassicism at the Musikverein vs. a hybrid style combining historicism, Sessionism, and Art Nouveau at the Konzerthaus. The artistic profiles differ, too, the Konzerthaus being more deliberately populist and eclectic, though still with an allegiance to the classics. It’s always a special thrill when the Vienna Phil does a runout to the other house. On this occasion, the grand master Christian Thielemann conducts Felix Mendelssohn’s two Celtic-themed favorites (Fingal’s Cave and Symphony No. 3, the “Scottish”), followed by the popular Symphony No. 3 of Johannes Brahms. —Matthew Gurewitsch
