Wanda Koop once said, “The light in the North is constantly a thrill for me.” Look at her paintings and that statement comes to life. Koop creates ambiguous landscapes and horizons on large-scale canvases, blurred and swept with paint in crepuscular colors. The final touch? Vertical drip lines—one, sometimes two—fall from the top of the canvas, like teardrops. But who, or what, is crying? —E.C.
