In his eight years as artistic director of Spain’s Compañía Nacional de Danza, José Carlos Martínez has built a ballet repertory with an international flair. In September he hands the job on to Joaquín de Luz, lately a cherished star at the New York City Ballet. Before Martínez leaves, he and the company celebrate its 40th anniversary with a gala that includes a world premiere—Debussy’s L’Après-midi d’un Faune, choreographed by Barcelona-born Cayetano Soto. —L.J.
