As monochromatic as Victorian rooms and fashions appear in photographs, in reality the era was filled with exuberant color. Innovative developments in fabric dyes led to a new vibrancy in textiles and clothes. Avant-garde painters experimented with bold colors that caused both elation and, for some, concern. This explosion of color can be seen in the work of Pre-Raphaelites such as John Ruskin and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and in the art of John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler. In its latest exhibition, the Ashmolean explores Victorian innovations in color through paintings, objects, clothing, and accessories. —Isabella Carter
