clinamen

Céleste Boursier-Mougenot, clinamen (v.11), 2026.

643 Park Ave, New York, NY 10065, United States

In 55 B.C., the Roman poet Lucretius wrote about the concept of clinamen, the unpredictable swerve of atoms that allows them to collide and create matter. More than 2,000 years later, the French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot has drawn on that idea at the Park Avenue Armory, where she’s transformed the vast hall into a sonic meditation space. The center of the room holds a pool of water in which white ceramic bowls drift with the current and gently chime when they touch. The only sound in the room comes from their movement. Because no sequence of collisions is ever repeated, each visit offers a unique sonic experience. In a city defined by constant motion, clinamen offers a rare space for stillness and reflection. —Clara Scholl
