Hailed the “queen of texture” by Paper magazine, the West Berlin designer and icon Claudia Skoda revolutionized the underground fashion scene in the 1970s and 80s. She was likened to Madonna, Coco Chanel, and Vivienne Westwood, and stars such as David Bowie, Cher, and Tina Turner were among the many who wore her designs. Once the stuff of grandma’s sweaters, her machine-threaded knitwear became the uniform of Berlin’s bohemian artists. This retrospective explores Skoda’s early years, her relationships, her roles in art and fashion, and of course, her unforgettable catwalk shows. —E.C.
