“I like making images that from a distance seem kind of seductive, colorful, luscious, and engaging,” the photographer and filmmaker Cindy Sherman has said, “and then you realize what you’re looking at is something totally opposite.” For its first post-coronavirus exhibition, the Fondation Louis Vuitton pairs a major retrospective of Sherman’s work—including a recent, previously unseen series—with works from its own collection. The grand theme is portraiture, beginning with the masterful, ever-intriguing self-portraits for which Sherman is known, and pulling in the work of other major artists who’ve experimented with the genre, including Marina Abramović, Louise Bourgeois, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Andy Warhol. —J.V.
