The South Korean master Chung Sang-Hwa blazed his own path between Western abstraction and Eastern imperialism. His Dansaekhwa, or “monochrome painting,” involves the layering and stripping away of paint, sometimes with the addition of wax and clay, an arduous process that results in a sort of deep minimalism.
