The Greek artist Chryssa named her 10-foot-tall, neon-blue, 1966 masterpiece The Gates to Times Square. Living in Manhattan in the 60s, she wanted to capture the essence of city life. To do so, she turned to commercial materials and industrial processes. Chryssa, who died in 2013, at 79, was renowned for her use of metal, glass tubes, and neon. Yet for the past 25 years her prized piece hasn’t been seen at all. It is now on loan from the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, and has been restored for the Menil exhibition. —Clara Molot
