In 2018, at age 23, Tyler Mitchell became the first Black photographer to shoot a Vogue cover (of Beyoncé, no less). Mitchell has spoken of the practical limitations of fashion photograpy, telling GQ that it’s “a real fine game of negotiating needs in a fashion commission, because the function of an editorial is to please advertisers.” Gagosian is now highlighting a different side of Mitchell’s practice: his fine art photography. With images shot in upstate New York and in London studios, Mitchell’s series “Chrysalis” offers a Utopian vision of Black life. His photographs capture people in repose: swinging on tires, lounging in yards, swimming in lakes. —Jensen Davis
