A veiled fence extending for 24.5 miles across the hills of California’s Sonoma and Marin counties. 7,503 vinyl gates running along 23 miles of New York’s Central Park. These are among the many environmental artworks created by husband and wife Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Their best-known projects, however, see them “wrapping” national monuments. Thirty-five years after the couple wrapped Paris’s Pont-Neuf, Christo (Jeanne-Claude died in 2009) is back in Paris to wrap the Arc de Triomphe. Ahead of the installation, opening this fall, an exhibition looks back at Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s time in Paris, which saw their transition from traditional canvas work to public art. Highlights range from the couple’s early paintings to ephemera that tracks the development of the historic Pont-Neuf project. —J.V.
