“What shifts within you,” asks the New York-based artist Christina Kruse, “how do you have to recalibrate yourself in order to remain upright, and what does that look like?” Kruse uses her practice to explore notions of balance and harmony. Her photographs, paintings, and sculpture all question the daunting instability of experience. Born in Germany, Kruse moved to the U.S. at 16 to attend high school in Phoenix, Arizona, and was scouted by a model management company soon after. When she moved to New York, she began experimenting with polaroids, and created her first collages. At Helwaser Gallery her newest sculptures are on view. Created in wood, these sleek, seamless objects embody complexity and tranquility at once. —E.C.
