The Soho Photography Quarter (SPQ) is a brand new cultural space for open-air exhibitions, located in an alley called Ramillies Place, now transformed into an inviting gateway to Soho. The exhibitions will highlight the very best in contemporary photography, and the inaugural presentation features work by the Australian artist Dr. Christian Thompson AO. In “Being Human Human Being,” he explores the portrait in a uniquely subversive way. “I think of them more as conceptual anti-portraits than self-portraits,” says Thompson, who uses himself as a vehicle to interrogate white systems of reference. “My physical head and shoulders simply provide a template, something that I’m just constantly building on top of.” Formally trained as a sculptor, Thompson has created a multimedia immersive experience for SPQ. —Clara Molot
