In the 1970s, when hip-hop was gaining momentum in the Bronx, a young artist far away was experimenting with turntablism. His name was Christian Marclay. A mere teenager at the time, living in San Rafael, California, Marclay manipulated gramophone records and turntables, using them as musical instruments and creating intricate sound collages. For Doors, his latest video installation, Marclay collected film clips in which a door opens or closes, and then edited the clips so that you feel the actors getting lost and then finding themselves—both visually and aurally. “The door is of course very symbolic,” Marclay has said, “but I see it more as sculptural.” This exhibition presents the video installation alongside a new series of sculptures. —Elena Clavarino
