“I don’t really have any friends except for you,” Vincent van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo, in 1883, “and when I’m ill you’re always in my thoughts.” Despite his notorious flare-ups and volatile relationships, Vincent stayed close to Theo his whole life. They began their careers together at the art firm Goupil & Cie. When Vincent was dismissed in 1876, Theo convinced him to pursue art in earnest. Later, when he struggled to make ends meet, his younger brother took care of him, traveling back and forth from Arles. It all ended on July 29, 1890, when Van Gogh pointed a gun to his own chest in a field in Auvers. He was only 37. This exhibition tells Van Gogh’s story of setbacks, hardship, and triumph through the perspectives of Theo; his wife, Jo; and their son, Vincent. —Elena Clavarino
