“I hope this auction will show that we are here and we are fighting to ensure that women have the opportunity to make decisions about their own bodies and lives, that women are seen and heard,” explains the artist Amy Sherald of Choice Works 2020, a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood of Greater New York. Co-chairing the benefit with Sherald is the artist Cecily Brown; Sotheby’s executive chair of fine art, Amy Cappellazzo; and Sotheby’s chair of North and South America, Lisa Dennison. There is good reason to expect that the sale will do more than send a message—the last Choice Works auction raised over $2 million for Planned Parenthood. The art up for auction this year, submitted by the artists themselves, includes Brown’s Immigrant Song and Elizabeth Peyton’s portrait of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. —C.J.F.
