“You can see things more clearly when they are small,” says Cecily Brown. While the British painter is best known for her massive abstract works, she always returns to a smaller format. These pieces are quieter and softer. Brown admits that because of the restraint they require, her tiniest works are more difficult to make than the bigger ones. They are also a welcome exercise in the kind of precision that produces seemingly effortless expression. —Clara Molot
