“The connection so many little girls felt to Belle from Beauty and the Beast or Ariel from The Little Mermaid,” writes Elyssa Maxx Goodman in Glitter and Concrete: A Cultural History of Drag in New York City, published in fall 2023, “was suddenly something I myself felt for Vida, Noxeema, and Chi-Chi in To Wong Foo. They were my princesses, twirling curves of color like those from movie musicals, but they were now.” Goodman is remembering the 1995 movie that introduced her to glamour—as embodied by three drag queens—when she was around seven years old. Obsessed by drag ever since, she takes the stage in Brooklyn to read from her new book. Goodman will be joined by the drag artists Julie J, Xana Whoria, and Jupiter, who will converse with her and perform for the audience. Goodman herself is a writer and photographer who specializes in arts and culture. —Laura Jacobs
