Can Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats be more than furry, purry show people in unitards? What if the cats in question were alter egos, fierce inner animals waiting to be unleashed? The newest adaptation of Webber’s musical—co-directed by Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch; choreographed by Arturo Lyons and Omari Wiles—replaces Broadway with Ballroom. Think L.G.B.T.Q. culture, Paris is Burning, and Pose. In a nightclub, a group of so-called “Jellicle” Cats performs at an annual ball for the chance to be reborn into a new life. Each character in the competition represents a different ballroom category, from “old way” to “new way” to “vogue femme.” Reconfigured to include stage-side cabaret table seating, PAC’s show presents an immersive mix of musical theater and queer underground subculture. —Jeanne Malle
