If someone asked me to go see a documentary about the carpet industry in Dalton, Georgia, I’d probably feign illness and go see Barbie instead. Yet Carpet Cowboys, produced by John Wilson and the indie studio Memory, accomplishes the seemingly impossible feat of making carpets captivating. Beautifully shot, with cinematography reminiscent of a Wes Anderson film, the documentary takes a thoughtful approach to the lives of those pushing the wheels of the carpet industry. The subjects include a Scottish expat cowboy who designs carpets for casinos, a father-son duo who are self-proclaimed North Georgia hillbillies, and a lab tech tasked with testing the product’s resistance to blood and vomit. Pensive in some moments and humorous in others, the film wisely gives its subjects the space to tell the story of the carpet capital of the world—a story of the American Dream holding fast in an industry in flux. —Paulina Prosnitz
