Trained in law but longing for the stage, the mezzo-soprano Ève-Maud Hubeaux wondered if she ought to apply for young-artists programs to bolster her portfolio as a privately trained singer. No, a senior colleague told her, don’t bother. Find a regional company where you can get real experience. In short order, Hubeaux began cutting a swath across the great stages of Europe in lots of the great roles for her voice type, and no wonder. Vocally and dramatically, she simply owns the stage. Now, she gives her San Francisco debut as Bizet’s indomitable femme fatale, opposite the similarly combustible tenor Jonathan Tetelman. Francesca Zambello directs. Benjamin Manis conducts in his company debut. —Matthew Gurewitsch
