The late artist Carlito Carvalhosa grew up in Rio de Janeiro, where as a young man he shared a studio space with six friends. Together they formed a group called Casa 7. It was the 1980s and the young artists quickly became interested in a new German style of painting, a radical late-modernist style called Neo-Expressionism. Over the years, Carvalhosa created striking installations in diverse media such as fabric, neon, wax, mirrors, and sound—a Brazilian response to his European counterparts. In the first exhibition since his untimely death in 2021, works from defining moments in Carvalhosa’s career are on view. —Elena Clavarino
