Fashion has always been a force in society, but in the 1990s the volume turned way up. A new crop of designers—recall the British swagger of John Galliano and Alexander McQueen, the fresh Americana of Isaac Mizrahi and Todd Oldham—hit the reset button. A group of sassy, leggy models with names like Turlington, Evangelista, Campbell, Crawford, and Banks owned the catwalks as “supermodels.” In Paris, the couture shows became over-the-top extravaganzas, while in New York, ready-to-wear went big top in Bryant Park. Fashion became a spectator sport and fashion photographers caught it all. This exhibition zooms in on that decade of shoots and shows. It’s curated by Claudia Schiffer, one of those pouty, powerful supermodels. —L.J.
