Boston Symphony Orchestra/Andris Nelsons and John Williams conduct Montgomery, Williams, Copland, and Stravinsky

July 24, 2021
297 West St, Lenox, MA 01240, USA

Buried in the boldface laundry list, like a light saber in a Cracker Jack box of sticky popcorn, is the world premiere of the Violin Concerto No. 2 of John Williams, whose musical wizardry has set pulses racing in Jaws, the Star Wars saga, the Indiana Jones franchise, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Schindler’s List. It’s been said that since film music is written to fade in and out, a soundtrack can’t develop the independent momentum and power of a bona fide symphonic composition. That’s usually true. But who has written more memorable themes than Williams? And his catalogue of stand-alone concert pieces has considerable heft. The superstar German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, ever a champion of contemporary composers (though usually thornier ones), is on hand to lend the new work her signature glamour and authority. —M.G.
