“Bossa bossa” is a celebratory chant that is uttered by African migrants as they cross into European lands. It’s meaning is “victory victory.” Dividing his time between Cameroon and Belgium, the multidisciplinary artist Pascale Marthine Tayou is interested in the African-European dichotomy. He asks questions both pragmatic—”What makes some people go out of their boxes?”—and poetic: “Will we ever know the purpose of our ambitions?” With painting and sculpture he’s created a colorful, museum-sized environment in which to search for answers. —E.C.
