“A painting that is well composed is half finished,” said Pierre Bonnard (1867–1947). In 2018, the Kimbell acquired Bonnard’s Landscape at Le Cannet (1928), a view of the land around his villa in Cannes. The painting is fascinating. The crook of the branch in the upper left corner is so like the crook of an elbow in the lower right. Lavender mountains, salmon clouds, emerald trees—it’s a world bathing in color, half finished. To celebrate the painting, the Kimbell presents its first exhibition on the great Bonnard, bringing together approximately 70 works from public and private collections in the U.S. and Europe.
