You could say that the human body is like a piece of land, a topography of hills and valleys, clearings and holes. In fact, the revolutionary artist Louise Bourgeois once said, “Well, just picture a female dog, or a cow; you put her on her back and you have a very interesting, moving, live and flexible landscape.” Taking off from that analogy, “Body Topographies” presents work by four renowned female artists—Bourgeois, Heidi Bucher, Adriana Varejão, and Cecila Vicuña. Each has made art that uses the body to explore social, political, and psychological realities. The exhibition includes sculpture, works on paper, and paintings. —E.C.
