Black Market with Michael K. Williams, Season Two

“You have scammers who scam to live a lifestyle,” says a blurred-out talking head in a red bandanna in Season Two of Black Market with Michael K. Williams. “Then you got people who scam to provide.” As in Season One, the new episodes in this documentary series, wrapped just before the actor’s death last fall, reveal the very human characters and motivations that drive the world of illicit trade, whether it’s carjacking, gambling, or the purchase of illegal weapons. Williams, who starred in the popular TV show The Wire, is a knowing guide. Not only did he start off on the rough streets of Brooklyn’s Flatbush—where doing drugs, stealing cars, and fighting (hence the signature scar on his face) were the norm—but after acting in Tupac’s Bullet and Scorsese’s Bring Out The Dead, Williams suffered a career low that returned him to those same streets. Illuminating the underworld of crime that exists all around us, the series also reads as an ode to the actor, gone too soon at just 54. —J.V.
