“I think the work that I’m doing is really just to elevate the place of Black women in the world,” says Billie Zangewa, the Malawian-South African artist whose hand-stitched silk tapestries tell intimate stories of Black womanhood, the challenges as well as the beauty. “A Quiet Fire” features a new panoramic collage that challenges the stereotypes deployed historically to subjugate Black women—woven throughout are images of strength, independence, and hope. Alongside earlier works that depict “acts of daily feminism” from Zangewa’s own life in Johannesburg, there’s a commissioned piece made especially for the exhibition. Autobiographical, yet fiercely relatable, Zangewa’s textile compositions pull Black women from across the African diaspora into their fold. —Nyla Gilstrap
