“The pictures were painted directly through me,” the Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) once said, “without preliminary drawings and with great power.” Although af Klint turned to radical abstract works in the early 20th century, as did contemporaries Kandinsky and Mondrian, she never knew international acclaim. Quite the opposite, in fact. While male contemporaries were celebrated for their vision, af Klint’s mystical canvases were left to collect dust in the attic. The documentary Beyond the Visible explores her struggles and feminist ideals. It also suggests that had af Klint been recognized alongside her male counterparts, her work might have changed the course of abstract art in the 20th century. —E.C.
