The down-to-earth Norwegian superstar Leif Ove Andsnes addresses Beethoven’s majestic Piano Concerto No. 5, popularly known in the English-speaking world (for reasons that remain nebulous) as the “Emperor.” It’s hardly what you’d call a curtain-raiser, yet there it is at the top of Jaap van Zweden’s program. Then comes the world premiere of Jacob’s Ladder by the minimalist icon Steve Reich, who turns 87 on October 3. For a chaser, there’s Schubert’s serene, mysterious Symphony No. 8, popularly known as the “Unfinished,” though whether it’s unfinished or not is anybody’s guess. —Matthew Gurewitsch
