Beethoven and His World

July 31 – Aug 9, 2020
Landstrasse 177, 7250 Klosters-Serneus, Switzerland

If total immersion in the masterworks of Ludwig van Beethoven on the eve of his 250th birthday is what you crave, three of the summer’s concerts in this high-toned Alpine getaway should be right up your alley: “Reason and Revolution,” on August 7, showcases the Violin Concerto and Symphony No. 3 (“Eroica”); “Reaching for the Heavens,” August 8, is devoted to the Piano Concerto No. 5 (“Emperor”) and Symphony No. 7; and “The Crowning Glory,” August 9, is a traversal of Beethoven’s three final piano sonatas by the Olympian András Schiff. Elsewhere, the master’s contribution may be substantial, token, climactic, or conspicuous by its absence. Still, the umbrella title “Beethoven and His World” is valid. His music—like Bach’s, unlike Mozart’s—has a way of putting anything else you’ve been listening to into a new perspective. —M.G.
