In the opening scenes of Beef, a desolate looking Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) is at a home improvement store, trying to decide whether he should keep the three gas stoves and a carbon monoxide device he bought earlier. In the parking lot, he swerves his ramshackle truck into a fancy white car, which belongs to the prim and successful Amy Lau (Ali Wong). She gives him the finger and he chases her in a fit of road rage. The showdown culminates with Amy almost crashing into Danny’s car. What ensues is a long and ridiculous feud—a “beef.” It’s a symptom of their unhappiness that whenever something goes wrong in their personal lives, they are back at each other’s throats. One of the best things on Netflix today, Lee Sung Jin’s Beef is a fast-paced dark comedy that will have you laughing and recoiling in equal measure. —Elena Clavarino
