Andy Warhol grew up in a two-bedroom apartment in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Eastern European parents. He was shy and gay and loved to draw. In the 1950s, he began to draw commercially, and before long people took notice. Warhol blossomed in New York City. The silk screens, the soup cans, the Coke bottles—the 60s! The artist of iconography was now himself an icon. Presenting 400 works on loan from Pittsburgh’s Andy Warhol Museum, this is the largest Warhol retrospective in China to date. The exhibition asks: How did Pittsburgh shape Warhol and his art? —E.C.
