Yet another mystical painter too long ignored. Arild Rosenkrantz was born into Danish aristocracy in 1870. His father, a baron, died when he was three, and his mother, Scottish and a spiritual medium, took him to live in Italy when he was 11. At 10, young Rosenkrantz already knew he wanted to be an artist, and he had the freedom to do it. No doubt influenced by his mother, color and light became spiritual mediums in his work, which moved between painting, sculpture, illustration, and stained-glass design. Rosenkrantz was part of the Arts and Crafts movement in England, was influenced by the philosopher Rudolf Steiner, and lived until 1964. Here is the first major museum exhibition of this ebullient, imaginative artist. —L.J.
