Barbara Kruger’s pointed texts are about as direct as you can get. A conceptual artist and collagist, Kruger, who is now 77, is famous for laying boldface text—statements like “Your body is a battleground”—on top of provocative photographs. For her first solo show in a Berlin museum, Kruger has created an installation that occupies the Neue Nationalgalerie’s upper level. Combining her own text with quotes from George Orwell, James Baldwin, and Walter Benjamin, and using just three colors—red, black, and white—she takes aim at authoritarian government and discrimination. —Elena Clavarino
