Even with the increasing lack of privacy in the internet age, Banksy has managed to stay anonymous. Active since the 1990s, the British street artist, political activist, and film director is still known by his pseudonym and his signature graffiti style. “Most of his transient art could only be viewed on tiny smartphone screens, which is no way to experience the scale or emotion of Bansky’s work,” says Hazis Vardar, a nightclub owner and the founder of Banksy museums. Before opening the New York location, Vardar launched similar projects in Barcelona, Brussels, Kraków, and Paris. Presenting more than 160 works, including videos and animated visuals, this exhibition will be the world’s largest Banksy display. Though the artist did not make the pieces himself, the museum hired a group of anonymous artists to recreate Banksy’s style and retain the unique feeling of seeing street art. —Jeanne Malle
