In 1900, Paris was host to two global events: its fifth Exposition Universalle (world’s fair), and its first Olympic Games. Sports culture had grown around the world, and European cities were particularly excited by English football, rugby, and cricket. Sports unified the working class, a population that could now participate in a newfound community. In honor of this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris, the Musée d’Orsay—formerly the train station that brought flocks of people to Paris—recaptures the excitement of that year. At the heart of the exhibition is Maurice Denis’s Jeu de Volant, painted in 1900 and depicting women playing badminton in a forest. —Zack Hauptman
