Lauren Gunderson found inspiration for her new play, Anthropology, in the pages of the San Francisco Chronicle. It was a story about a man who created an A.I.-powered chatbot to impersonate his dead fiancé. Gunderson’s take on the story focuses on Merril, a Silicon Valley software engineer whose sister simply disappears one day. The grieving Merril programs a chatbot to simulate her sister. Then the chatbot starts producing its own details about the disappearance. Anna Ledwich, a Hampstead veteran, directs Anthropology’s world premiere. —Jensen Davis
