Anthea Hamilton: Mash Up

Feb 18 – May 15, 2022
Leuvenstraat 32, 2000 Antwerpen, Belgium

British artist and Turner Prize nominee Anthea Hamilton has long been known for mash-ups. She takes photographs of previous works and uses them in collages. She combines unexpected materials as a way of questioning gender roles, sexuality, tradition. No stranger to performance art, actors often play out scenes within her installations. “I’m forever wishing I was a minimalist,” Hamilton once said, “but somehow that doesn’t become me.” In 2018, at the Tate, she dressed performers like squashes (yes, the vegetable!) and had them slowly roam the white-tiled gallery, bringing an eerie dystopian vibe to the space. Hamilton is now 44, and this is her first major survey. —Elena Clavarino
