In her new nine-photograph series, the New Zealand-born artist Ann Shelton creates a photographic garden. She draws upon the Japanese art of Ikebana, which sees flowers and herbs arranged in a way that brings out hidden themes, and then photographs the arrangements against monochrome backgrounds of bold color. The images that result somehow remind us of the knowledge that nature holds. —E.C.
