Born in Mumbai and raised in Singapore, Sahana Ramakrishnan’s art is informed by a wide range of spiritualities. Aspects of Buddhist, Hindu, and Norse mythologies appear in her work, from images of great floods to swirling snakes. Her exhibition at Fridman Gallery centers thematically on the ocean, representing it as a space where generational memory accumulates. The paintings themselves are created through a cumulative process, with Ramakrishnan painstakingly layering oil paint, acrylic, and gold leaf on top of each other. The result is paintings that embody both myth and magic—dynamic and surreal. —Paulina Prosnitz
