In 1960, the American artist Jasper Johns made his first print: a lithograph of a target. He realized it was the perfect medium in which to embody ideas about change and the passage of time. Fascinated, he set about reworking his paintings into prints, using intaglio, lithography, wood, screen printing, lead relief, and blind embossing. Today, at 90, Johns is widely regarded as one of our greatest printmakers, with works numbering in the thousands. This survey of 100 prints traces his development from those early days up through 2018. —E.C.
