“I paint,” says the Black artist Amy Sherald, “because I am looking for versions of myself in art history and in the world.” Sherald gained international recognition when she painted Michelle Obama’s official portrait. A striking departure from traditional portraiture, the painting sees the former First Lady seated sideways, wearing a magnificent modernist gown, her chin perched on the back of her hand. All of Sherald’s portraits are executed with the same fresh realism: the figures are elegant, and look straight at viewers with Napoleonic grandeur. In this exhibition, Sherald’s subjects stand proud against monochrome backgrounds. The artist also debuts two new works of quintessential American scenes, scaled large. —E.C.
