The photographer Robert Adams has been traveling through America for 50 years, capturing the secrets of prairies, the forests, the deserts. He has a phrase for the sense of harmony in these images—“the silence of light”—and he considers it the antithesis of noisy urbanism. This exhibition juxtaposes Adams’s photographs of the American West with his shots of strip malls, disruptive highways, and sprawling suburbs. Adams asks his viewers, How can we stand by and let our earth be desecrated? —Elena Clavarino
