American Ballet Theatre Summer Season 2024

Aran Bell and Chloe Misseldine in American Ballet Theatre’s Swan Lake.

June 18 – July 20, 2024
30 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York, NY 10023, United States

The American Ballet Theatre used to glide into the Metropolitan Opera House for a magisterial eight-week summer season—an embarrassment of riches. The engagement is now down to five weeks, quite a blow for balletomanes. And the five programs on offer are all evening-length—no repertory nights of three or four short works, just four story ballets and the New York premiere of Wayne McGregor’s Woolf Works, first shown at the Royal Ballet in 2015 and inspired by the writings of Virginia Woolf. Each program is on for a week: Onegin, Swan Lake, Romeo & Juliet, and last year’s premiere, Like Water for Chocolate. If my tone is a little flat it’s because this programming is flat. But we must support the home team, and there will be stellar performances. For white tutus it’s Swan Lake; for grandeur, Romeo & Juliet; John Cranko’s Onegin is a staple in many companies; and Like Water for Chocolate is inventively staged. Woolf Works has been acclaimed in Europe, but as always, we must see for ourselves. —Laura Jacobs
